Mark Perez Navarro is a first-generation American from Independence, Missouri. He earned his undergraduate degree at Pitzer College, where he graduated with Honors with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies. At Pitzer College, his thesis examined economic engagements between Bolivia and China in lithium extraction and what this means for economic development and security in the region. He employed theoretical lenses in coloniality, economics, and politics, analyzing how these engagements reveal the contradictions in Bolivia’s decolonial projects with its lithium extraction. Mark’s academic journey led him to the prestigious Sarah Lawrence Oxford Exchange program, where he spent an academic year studying at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. During this time, he focused on political theory and international relations in Latin America. His research culminated in an Oxford thesis exploring US foreign policy and multinational corporations in Guatemala from 1950 to 1960 and its impact on post-colonialism in the country. Throughout his educational path, Mark actively engaged in internships at the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City and the Community Service League. He worked on various social projects to address digital disparities, expand internet access to underserved areas, create digital literacy programs, and advocate for policies promoting equal access to technology resources for all communities. Mark further worked on social development and educational projects in his community to increase college counseling and opportunities for students from his community. Mark is a 2024 Department of State Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Graduate Fellow and a Duke Carlucci Fellow. Outside of his academic pursuits, Mark enjoys weightlifting and running.
